ROMEO & JULIET TAKES THE STAGE WITH MEHMET & KAZIM’S STAGE DESIGN!

William Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece takes on a completely new form under the direction of Emre Akal, presented as “Die Tragödie von Romeo & Julia” (The Tragedy of Romeo & Juliet) with stage design by Mehmet & Kazım. The Munich-based director, known for his distinctive theatrical language that questions social structures and power dynamics, places the classic love story at the very center of violence.

In the stage and video design, the artist duo Mehmet & Kazım enhance this atmosphere by merging digital imagery with the three-dimensionality of theater.

“Die Tragödie von Romeo & Julia” redefines Shakespeare’s classic tale through a modern stage aesthetic, pop-digital elements, and a visually striking design. This powerful interpretation offers audiences a unique experience, brought to life through the creative vision of Mehmet & Kazım. Their innovative approach transforms the stage from a mere backdrop into a living element that deepens the emotional intensity of the story and reinforces its contemporary perspective.

Juliet (Luiza Monteiro) and Romeo (Mario Lapotta) meet for the first time on stage while brushing their teeth—a moment that brings a hint of pink into an otherwise gray world. Yet, like the galactic debris falling around them, their love quickly descends into darkness. At the height of the tragedy, the two young lovers—cast out by their parents—turn back in fear instead of stepping into a “new world.” In the end, both families are destroyed, leaving behind only the tragedy itself.
