NEW PUBLIC SCULPTURE IN TORONTO BY RYAN GANDER: THE CAT, THE CLOCK AND THE ROCK

Ryan Gander’s new permanent public sculpture in Toronto, “The Cat, the Clock and the Rock”, offers a multilayered narrative on time, matter, and everyday life. A large clock, crafted from highly reflective stainless steel, rests atop a digital replica of a 4.3-billion-year-old rock ethically sourced from the Hudson Bay region of Canada. Nearby, a life-sized sleeping cat sculpted from stone lies peacefully in the shadow of the clock and the rock.

Gander’s conceptual approach invites viewers to reflect on both cosmic time and individual existence. Through a poetic interplay of nature, technology, and life, the sculpture creates a contemplative pause within the urban landscape. “The Cat, the Clock and the Rock” can be visited at 234 Simcoe Street in downtown Toronto.
