"CONTEMPLATION OF COLORS"

PILEVNELI is pleased to announce Efsun Erkılıç’s first solo exhibition entitled "Contemplation of Colors", which will be on view at Mandarin Oriental, Bodrum between August 5 – 26, 2021. The exhibition consists of works that represent a negotiation between ritual and coincidence through controlled explosions of colors. The artist’s compositions deal with the inductive method of thinking in the light of symbolism and point to an effortlessly achieved circularity as well as a questionable harmony.
Erkılıç, who accepts the moment when the ink meets the paper as the point zero of her work and interprets the paths that colors open for themselves as a reflection of their desire to return to this point, reflects the traces of her internal and corporeal journeys through the meditative depths of colors. The creative process behind Erkılıç's paintings alludes to abstract expressionism in terms of her ink usage and technique; but the artist defines portraiture as a hidden source of inspiration. Painting colors as individuals belonging to a special class of nature, she subtly blurs the line between flattering and realistic depiction.
Erkılıç points out that although her works emerge from similar rituals and methods, they generate very different processes and outcomes. Paintings that look monochrome at first glance but contain different pigment depths serve as an introduction to the complex relationship between density and surface. In this context, the artist approaches each painting as a contemplation in itself and creates a spiral that extends from abstract thought to materiality only to fall back into abstractness again.
