EAT ME: A Contemporary Opera by :mentalKLINIK Presented Across Europe

EAT ME, a contemporary opera developed by Oester, directed by Aïda Gabriëls, with scenography and spatial design by :mentalKLINIK, premiered on April 30 at Concertgebouw Brugge and was presented on May 8, 2026 at Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

In this project, :mentalKLINIK approached the stage not as a fixed backdrop, but as a constantly evolving environment that envelops the audience. As the opera unfolded within the installation, movement and choreography emerged from objects in use—and on the verge of use.

Audience members, performers, and musicians occupied the same spatial structure, dissolving the boundaries between observation and participation. This framework transformed the viewer into an active part of the experience.

EAT ME rendered visible the ever-expanding, self-generating nature of desire through the interplay between space, body, and object.
